A ratio is measure of the relationship between the fractional parts of a whole. It is a way of comparing quantities. If the ingredients of a cake are all doubled and their ratio remains the same it's reasonable to expect the weight of the cake to double. To convert numbers expressed as a ratio, first add them together and write as fractions. This makes the actual values more meaningful. The sum of the fractions will always equal one or the whole. An application to electronics might be to divide a length of cable in the ratio of say 7 : 5 or currents flow in a divider circuit in a ratio of 4 : 5. What is the total current if the smaller is 20mA? The answer is easily calculated as follows. 20 ÷ 4 = 5mA. Therefore, 5mA × 5 = 25mA in the other branch. Total current = 20mA + 25mA = 45mA. Ratios are particularly applicable to the logarithmic change between two levels of sound or power output. TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING: In what aspect of home life is a ratio particularly useful? How can it be applied when there are increasing or decreasing numbers of family members? Proportional Parts Quantity Division. A quantity of 635 Is shared out in the following ratio. A = 3 | B = 6 | C = 3. How much does C receive? Choose Answer option: A = 79.38 | B = 119.06 | C = 158.75 | D =142.88
